Compressor Applications
Packaging
Compressed air can be used to generate vacuum used in the packaging process. It is also used in conveying systems to move food and ingredients.
Blower and Vacuum Applications
Air cushion machines
Positive displacement blowers in vacuum operation are used to suck water and sand mixture being used during crude oil extraction by means of pressurised water injection process.
Blister packaging
Centrifugal pumps are used for liquid handling, cleaning and recovery in auxiliary services / processes in refineries.
Evacuating
When packing products, prior to sealing a vacuum pump would be used to evacuate the air from the packaging. Correct packaging provides the best transportation protection and ensures that products such as electronic parts, pharmaceuticals, etc, can be shipped to the customer aseptically and free of dust.
Evacuation
When bottling beverages, cosmetic or pharmaceutical products, the bottle is evacuated before being filled to make sure the product reaches the customer in good quality.
Filling and closing machines
When bottling beverages, cosmetic or pharmaceutical products, the bottle is at first evacuated before being filled to make sure the product reaches the customer in good quality.
Food packaging
Air and the oxygen that air contains have harmful effects on the quality and durability of fresh food. For this reason many processes need evacuation. The classic vacuum application in this field is vacuum packaging. Before sealing, a vacuum pump evacuates the air out of the packet. Vacuum pumps are used in numerous packaging machines for industrial use such as chamber machines, forming machines, carousels and tray sealers.
Forming
Liquid ring vacuum pumps and PD blowers in vacuum are used in the packaging production, specifically to make proper forms in plastic layers ( i.e. for fruits and vegetables care).
MAP packaging and storing
The surrounding pressure exerts a mechanical influence on the product that can greatly alter the external shape. For this reason, the MAP process has been the method of choice in many application areas. In this process, products are packaged in modified atmosphere and the oxygen removed. The product is enclosed in a blister package, placed in the vacuum chamber and evacuated.
The modified atmosphere is then injected and the blister package and food are sealed with a protective film. Using this method the food retains its original shape and meats present a suitably red appearance to customers, even after extended storage.
Reduction of transport volume
Vacuum is used to reduce the volume goods for transport and/or packaging. An example would be new clothes that are shrink-wrapped to be able to charge trucks and containers to maximum capacity.

Packaging Industry Solutions
MAC Valves Inc. is a global leader in air valve solutions for the packagine industry. Reliability and repeatability have been at the core of the solutions that we provide to the industry.
Pallet handling and positioning
Wood pallets have rough un-even surfaces and vary widely in construction and positioning. Piab’s Kenos foam gripper can provide an ideal solution for handling pallets and wood products due to its flexible gripping capabilities.
Polymer pallets can also be picked with vacuum cup and deep vacuum, which is a more lightweight solution in case you have limits on for your robot’s payload.
Piab also offers a large range of components for you to design and build your own solutions. Many of the products are modular and configurable in its design to help you get exactly what you need.
Bag and pouch handling
After the filling and sealing of the bag the final step is to handle the filled bag, which requires a specific suction cup designed especially for this application. A vacuum ejector with high initial vacuum flow is also needed to compensate for bag deformation during gripping without dropping the bag.
Piab has developed the leading suction cup to handle bags and pouches even with liquid content that constantly deforms e.g. when the robot path or acceleration is changed. Combining our bag suction cups with our high initial flow vacuum ejectors will allow you to increase your cycle times. The vacuum ejectors from Piab can be designed to both be utilized as a centralized system or de-centralized systems.

Sensor solutions for hydraulic and eccentric presses
Hydraulic and eccentric presses are used for the entire spectrum of paper forming. When forming manually operated presses, it is important to reliably protect the operator against injuries. In addition to operation that is optimized for safety at work, e.g., through mandatory two-handed operation, the safety devices must be designed so that they cannot be circumvented. Their sensor and control solutions can be intelligently incorporated into the machines’ processes, reliably secure them, and render them tamperproof.
Sensor solutions for punching machines and laser-cutting machines
Punching machines and laser-cutting machines separate very quickly and precisely smaller parts from large paper rolls. When processing paper with punch presses or with laser cutting, safety at work plays an important role, as work is performed with high pressure and high-energy laser beams. In addition, the sensor system used must be able to detect very small stamping parts to ensure a fault-free production process. Their sensor solutions reliably and flexibly safeguard endangered areas and minimize the influence on the workflows. Moreover, sensors check for tool availability, prevent collisions, and monitor the ejection.
Sensor solutions for sheet feeders
Using sheet feeders, the paper roll is unwound from a coil and is fed to a cutting machine or press. At the start of the unrolling process, the material must be quickly and unambiguously identified. During the unrolling process, the paper must then be inspected for uniform unrolling to ensure precise further processing during cutting. At the end of a paper coil, it must be changed as quickly as possible, so that downtime can be kept to a minimum. Our switching sensors reliably detect the end of the coil and, by means of loop and edge control, our measuring sensors enable a smooth process sequence when feeding in sheet metal.
